Description: Sponges have been used as a sanitary product for hundreds of years, long before menstruation was industrialised. Woman-Kind menstrual sponges are both practical and comfortable. Their use takes away many of the unpleasant and unsustainable aspects of manufactured tampons, such as drying out. They are biodegradable and non-polluting, and therefore one of the most eco-friendly sanitary product currently available. WOMAN-KIND Sponges are also very cost effective since one sponge can be used for 3 to 6 cycles.
Directions - Insertion:
We recommend that you check and clean your sponges before their first use. Occasionally you may find particles of coral or shell still in the sponge, simply gently rub and rinse these out. You can then soak it in a cup of water with vinegar for 10 minutes to disinfect it. Like tampons, sea sponges are not sterile, and you should ensure ordinary general hygiene during their use.
Wet your sponge with warm water. Squeeze out all the excess water. Squash your sponge and gently push it inside until it feels secure and comfortable.
If you feel pressure, you can trim your sponge a little. Trim around the perimeter a little at a time until you are happy with the size. If it is the proper fit, you should not be aware of it once it is properly inside.
Directions - Removal:
Simply feel for the perimeter of the sponge, grasp it and pull gently. If you wish, you may tie a piece of cotton string or waxed dental floss around your sponge to aid removal, however this is not necessary. Pull gently as sponges are delicate and tear easily.
You will become familiar with your flow and the capacity of the sponge, and feel when the sponge is full. In daily use, we recommend that you rinse your sponge at least every 4 hours. You may safely use your Woman-kind sponge overnight. Overnight and on very heavy days, you may wish to use a sanitary napkin for added protection and/or until you become confident about using the Woman-kind sponge. You may also use two sponges at the same time.
For use in public, you may wish to carry your spare sponge and a ziploc bag, and clean your used sponge later in the comfort of your own home.
Directions - Cleaning:
During your cycle, simply rinse your Woman-Kind menstrual sponge in warm water after every trip to the toilet, and when it is full. Squeeze out all excess water. And re-insert. We recommend that between your cycle, you gently disinfect your sponge. Do not use harsh soaps or detergents, as these can upset the pH of your vagina. Simply soak them in a cup of warm water with vinegar for ten minutes and then air dry. You can also use tea tree oil or lavender oil in warm water.
