Today we spoke to Kirsten, co-founder of Moontime 💚

Hi Kirsten, thanks for your time! How did Moontime get started?
“Co-founder Anja and I have a passion for women, their cycles & wellbeing, the environment and making a difference. Anja spent almost 2 years designing the pads before we joined forces and MoonTime was born… a local, heart based business. We met through dance many moons ago and have been soul sisters ever since.”

What were you both doing before?
“Anja is a successful clothing designer by trade. I’ve done many things before - I opened a skills development centre, worked in the green building field, have done advertising as well as personal development and healing.”

And what have been some of the challenges along the way?
“Changing people’s mindsets. Many women are far removed from their cycle and are unaware of the power that lies in the fact that they bleed. Menstruation is still a taboo subject - we have amazing conversations with women and men giving us the opportunity to create ease around it. Another challenge is getting out there so that people know that MoonTime and reusable pads exist.”

How do you engage with potential customers?
“Information is key – Half the population bleeds for half their lives - the average woman uses around 14,500 disposable products in her lifetime creating 150-200kg of menstrual product waste. A disposable pad takes 500-800 years to decompose and is filled with many nasty chemicals…. so we encourage women to switch to reusable and lighten their footprint. We have also added the menstrual cup to our offerings as a tampon alternative.”

And what’s on the cards for 2020?
“We’ve just started a non-profit company, which is so exciting. With support from sponsors, we want to engage with communities in SA over the long term and provide information & resources on menstruation & sustainability.”

That sounds amazing! Any longer term plans for Moontime?
“Longer term, we want to train women to make reusable pads and create an income for themselves. But it’s one step at a time. For now, we're focused on growing our business and making a difference to the earth and women from all walks of life”
