Q&A with Happy Insides

On Sunday, we had a lovely morning coffee ☕️ with Paarl-based ⛰ Lindsay, who recently started a beautiful, plant-based skincare range @happy_insides_co
~
Lindsay, thanks so much for taking the time! Tell me how and why you started happy insides?
“I have quite tricky skin – I suffer from pigmentation and was looking for natural products that would help. But I found that most ranges were so expensive! Because of that, I started researching remedies and making products myself… just for me and some close friends & family. Everyone loved them and encouraged me to consider pursuing it further… then happy insides was born last year...”
~
Amazing! And where did the name come from?
“My husband really didn’t like it actually…but it came to me when I thought about how I wanted my products to make people feel – inner joy!”
~
And what were you doing before?
“I was making, upcycling and selling vintage clothing. I also spent some time in customer service and creative writing for a shoe company. It’s funny when I look back because I loved it at the time, but it came to a natural end. And this new @happy_insides_co journey that I’m on aligns so much more with my soul”
~

So Lindsay, what have been your highs since starting?
“Meeting other people (I prefer the word “humans”!), interacting with them and hearing about their journeys – like we are doing today!”
~
I think that aspect has been our high too – meeting all our amazing, local brands. And any lows?
“when you start your own venture, you put so much love and energy into it. You get into a “build it and they will come” mindset. But it’s a big reality check when you realise that creating something great doesn’t happen overnight - it takes a long time, hard work and a lot of patience. But if you love it, it’s worth all of that.”
~
Agree, it’s a very humbling experience! And how does sustainability feature in your day to day life?
“You cannot completely overhaul your lifestyle overnight. It’s a slow and steady process. Some of the things I’ve done myself include going plant-based, which was a big deal coming from a meat loving Afrikaans family! People used to ask me what on earth I’d now eat at Braais! But I think it’s important to be patient and open when having these conversations – it’s not about forcing others to do what you are doing. Everyone has to decide what is right for them.
I also think sustainability is about being more conscious about what you’re buying and consuming. I’ve started removing plastic from my purchases. I’m also very focused on food waste – it’s something I have a lot of control over. If there’s food in my fridge that’s about to go to waste I’ll freeze it and put it in a smoothie – whether it’s a banana or a zucchini..!”

~

And we have to always ask this question – what’s your favourite @happy_insides_co product?
“That’s a tough one! I’d say the “soothe & repair” treatment oil – I obviously make it myself, so I know that it’s really pure and plant-derived. And it feels so delicious when you put it on! It helps my pigmentation and makes my skin feel cared for”
~
And any new products that you’re working on?
“I’m bringing out a toner and make up remover in one, which I’m excited about. I’m a sucker for a toner!”
~
Lovely! We cannot wait to stock it later this week! Finally, what are your hopes & dreams for 2020 and beyond?
“I started @happy_insides_co last year because it was a solution to my own problem(skin). I would love happy insides to also help others who are dealing with skin issues. I want people to feel joy when they take care of themselves – looking after yourself even in little ways feeds your soul. When you invest in yourself and your own joy, I think you have more to give to others… so I’m hoping happy insides can be a part of that”
~
🌱 We loved meeting Lindsay – a young, passionate lady (or better, human!) who is driven by a desire to help others feel good about themselves – inside and out. We are so excited to be one of her first stockists and help bring a bit more “happy insides” to South Africa
